Consultant Cardiologist at Chelsea and Westminster NHS trust
Dr Kanaganayagam is a cardiology specialist and lead clinician in heart failure for a large community service for Imperial College Healthcare and sees patients in a local clinic with chest pain, breathlessness, blackouts and palpitations.
With sub-specialist expertise, and formal accreditation, in multi-modality imaging he runs his own valve service, which allows a comprehensive assessment, including the use of 3D transoeophageal when necessary after advanced transthoracic echocardiographic assessment. He uses his specialist multi-modality imaging knowledge to help assess suitability for, and guide transcatheter procedures such as TAVI, PFO/ASD/LAA closures, in a clinical team.
Dr Kanaganayagam also sees patients for risk assessment when concerned or who have developed chest pain and directly performs non-invasive assessment when suitable with stress testing or CT scanning, and performs invasive coronary angiography when necessary.
Education and training
Dr Kanaganayagam was awarded a national scholarship whilst a medical student and was invited to undertake a PhD at the time. During his cardiology PhD he was nominated as a national young investigator of the year for his research in stem cell biology whilst still a medical student and went on to publish in the top cardiology journals. After graduating with distinction in specialist study, he went on to take up competitive academic placements at St Thomas’ Hospital and then later as an academic registrar at Imperial College London. During his junior doctor training he completed his MRCP examination. He has undertaken placements at the Royal Brompton Hospital for cardiac imaging training and completed this training at Imperial College Healthcare.
Dr Kanaganayagam works as a Consultant Cardiologist at Imperial College Healthcare in Hammersmith Hospital and in a community clinic, where he performs a dedicated cardiac MRI list, runs a heart failure service and performs a valve clinic service. He also works at Chelsea and Westminster NHS Trust at West Middlesex where he performs an invasive diagnostic angiography list, a stress echo and 3D transoesophageal echocardiography list.
Since completing his Cardiology PhD at St Thomas’ Hospital in cardiovascular stem cell biology whilst a medical student, Dr Kanaganayagam has continued to maintain an interest in research. He has participated in original research, written review articles and has written book chapters in cardiac CT, echocardiography and cardiac MRI and is doing ongoing research in cardiac MRI, cardiomyopathy and valve disease.
Dr Kanaganayagam has been invited to speak at International conferences and courses and teaches on both local and national courses. He has developed a simulator model and teaches on different imaging courses aimed at junior doctors as well as consultants.
